If you wish to travel from Tokyo to the western and southern regions, you have two options. The first is to drive or take the train (the Shinkansen connects Tokyo and Nagoya) along the coast, though this route keeps you away from the interior. However, in 1907, an expedition led by Yoshitaro Shibazaki explored Mount Tsurugi and discovered a walking stick and a sword left behind by a *Shugendo* ascetic. *Shugendo* is a spiritual practice that blends elements of Shinto, Buddhism, and Taoism.
